6. Snapshot of the Paratransit System

The Paratransit System

Paratransit services are provided to people with special needs who are unable to drive or use the bus. There are two main providers of specialized transportation service (paratransit) in Santa Cruz County: SCMTD and LiftLine.

 

Annual Trips Provided: 860,326 (FY2004)


SCMTD (Metro)

Operates ParaCruz, the Americans with Disabiltities Act-mandated paratransit service. This service is specifically designed for people who are functionally unable to use fixed bus transit due to physical, cognitive or psychiatric limitations and who live a three-quarter mile area around any fixed bus route.


Liftline

Directly provides services and contracts with taxi operators to provide door-to-door specialized transportation. Major destinations include the Stroke Center, Senior Dining Centers, and medical appointments.


Other Providers

Specialized transportation is also provided by a variety of non-profit or private for-profit entities, such as the American Red Cross, Volunteer Center, local taxi companies, Laidlaw/Mayflower.
