Section II. Key Issues Facing Transportation

7. The Complexity of Transportation Solutions is Increasing

Adding new highway lanes, widening city streets for dedicated turn lanes, bike lanes or sidewalks, and expanding transit facilities or services are neither simple nor inexpensive propositions. To minimize impacts on businesses and residential areas, new projects must be shoe-horned within existing developments. Design options, environmental issues, neighborhood concerns, and right-of-way needs can increase cost, and, in some cases, may cause a funded project to be delayed or withdrawn.
