Section II. Key Issues Facing Transportation

6. Need for Specialized Transportation Increasing

According to the 2000 Census, approximately one-quarter of the people in Santa Cruz County have disabilities. Many people with disabilities are able to use predominant transportation modes, such as the Metro bus system ('fixed-route bus'.) However, some people require special assistance. Specialized transportation, or paratransit service, provides door-to-door services to those with limited mobility. As baby boomers age, the number of seniors with specialized mobility needs is expected to increase. Meeting the ever-greater demands on the public transportation systems will be a significant challenge in the coming years.
